Case Negatives

Checklist of things to be done

1. Look at 1AC(s)
a) figure out all the claims they are making
b) identify which internal links are weak. Prioritize these points in developing your responses
c) read articles 1AC authors – see if they have CP ideas, other things that would solve the aff
d) the 1ACs are going to CHANGE!

2. frontlines to every advantage
a) You MUST find a ‘status quo sustainable’ argument for every advantage. Examples include: “no war” or “war doesn’t escalate” or “Brooks and Wohlforth: no challengers”
b) Seriously, you really have to have a ‘status quo sustainable’ argument.
c) good to have some offense, but it’s not crucial. Don’t force offense in if it’s no good
d) reasonable length. 4-5 cards is probably a good lengh. Those cards have to be underlined WELL. Include analytic arguments – but only good ones.

3. CPs. We need to have at least one counterplan available to read against the aff. This means a 1NC, 2NC blocks (including ones to answer the perm and likely solvency deficit arguments). Some ideas:
a) totally new counterplans, PICs. Etc.
b) advantage counterplans (to solve the advantage using some different mechanism)
c) finding more evidence for the counterplans in the generic

4. Politics links!
At a minimum, find evidence that the plan would be unpopular. Ideally, find evidence that people who don’t like the plan are powerful. If the plan isn't unpopular, find good evidence the other direction.

5. Topicality
Consider whether the aff has any T problems. If it does, get the argument from the T generic and re-work it. If the T generic doesn’t include the T argument we want to make, write it yourself. Email Charles or Caroline for advice about how to work on the argument.
